(edited)
The old citizens in the Fieldale neighborhood were greatly surprised and pained when on May 2nd, one of the oldest inhabitants of that neighborhood, Peter F. Griggs, was found dead in his home. The coroner said it was evident that he died from natural causes.
He was part owner of and had operated the Snow Bird Mill for more that 50 years.
He was 76 years old, a Confederate Veteran, one of the few who were with Lee at Appomattox.
He was the last of his immediate family.
His father, a Veteran of the War of 1812, has been dead for many years.
He cared for his mother, who was formerly Miss Lucy Gilley, until her death.
He never married.
===
Eighty-five years after he died, Confederate Pvt. Peter F. Griggs was honored Sunday at Roselawn Burial Park.
Members of the Martinsville-Henry County Veterans Honor Guard, the Stuart Hairston Camp of Sons of Confederate Veterans and the Mildred Lee Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy dedicated a grave marker to Griggs, who was 67 when he died in 1921.
