Melvin Charles Lockhart, 75, of Palestine, W.Va. passed away on Oct. 21, 2010 on his farm while running his dozer, doing what he liked to do.

He was born Sept. 21, 1935, the son of the late Ivan and Ica Lott Lockhart.

He married Pauline Nutter on Nov. 26, 1955. He graduated from Wirt County High School with the class of 1953. He was a former member of the Shiloh Baptist Church and in his younger years sang in the Morgan Quartet with Bev Morgan, Dale Goodwin, and Scott Anderson.

He had been employed at Corning Glass for a short while. He was then employed at DuPont until April 5, 1985 as a production foreman in Zytel division when he took early retirement at the age of 48. From that time on he enjoyed the farm with all of the green fields and animals.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, neighbor and friend. He was very giving and caring when someone had a need. He was right there to help in every way.

Surviving is his loving wife of 55 years Pauline; one daughter, Lou Ann, and her husband Jeff Thorn; two grandsons Mitchell and his wife Mikal Lockhart, and Justin Thorn. Two great- grandsons, Ashton Lockhart and Nicholas Thorn, whom he adored; daughter-in-law, Anita Lockhart; granddaughters, Nichole Osborne and Kayla Osborne Watson; one brother Harold Lockhart and his wife Janice; one brother-in-law Bill Nutter and his wife Patty; nephews and nieces, Steve and Juanita Lockhart, Debbie and Lewis Ruble, Mike and Susan Lockhart, Bob and Darlene Lockhart, Jim Nutter, Brenda and Paul Roberts, and Kathy and Paul Hancock; special friends Roger, Lottie and Tara Sheppard and a host of friends and his cats.

He was preceded in death by both his parents; two sons, Charles Lee Lockhart in 1959 and Randy Lockhart in 2006; and his mother-in-law and father-in-law.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Matheny Whited Funeral Home, Elizabeth, with the Rev. Robert Stanley officiating. Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. until time of the service on Monday. Interment will be at Shiloh Cemetery on Enterprise Road.
