He was born Feb. 12, 1922 in Caruthersville to Luther Young and Annie Orey Young.
Nov. 23, 1946, in Piggott, AR, he was united in marriage to Frances Schaffer.
George was a member of the Heavy Equipment Operators Local Union 513. He was a heavy equipment operator and mechanic and retired as a riverboat pilot. He was one of a group of local citizens who were instrumental in getting the Interstate I-55 Bridge to cross the river here at Caruthersville. He was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corp and a member of the American Legion. He was a lifetime resident of the Bootheel area.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Annie Young; five brothers, Mike, Billy, Fred, Donald and Wallace Young; one sister, Mary Medlin; and one granddaughter, Brittany Young.
George is survived by his wife, Frances Young; two sons, Joe Young and his wife Debby and Jack Young and his wife Donna, both of Bryan, TX; one daughter, Elizabeth Hardesty and her husband Chuck of Caruthersville; a sister, Faye Pierce of Caruthersville; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; as well as numerous other relatives and many friends.
Pallbearers for Mr. Young were Mike Byrd, Randall Waldrop, Jim Hill, James Mott, Earl Bullington and Jack Bailey. Honorary Pallbearers were Calvin House, Frand Pierce and Ancil Robertson.
Graveside Services were held Tuesday, October 26, 2010 in the Little Prairie Cemetery in Caruthersville with Brother Doug Boyd officiating.
H.S. Smith Funeral Home in Caruthersville was in charge of the services.
