Waist Gunner aboard B-24D Liberator #41-23678, nicknamed "Big Eagle" aka "Bathtub Bessie."


Shot down on mission to strike the aircraft manufacturing plants at Lille, France, and crashed at Le Fayel, near Templeuve, 10 kilometers southeast of Lillie. Six crewmembers were Killed In Action, and three were taken as prisoners. One member evaded capture.


This is stated as the first loss of a B-24 Liberator from the 8th Air Force to hostile enemy action in the European theatre of war.

Staff Sgt. Steve J. Eppolito. Missing in action Oct. 9, 1942. Body was brought to the U. S. in 1951 to Springfield cemetery. Mother and Sister have brought body from Springfield to Chicago for burial at Queen of Heaven cemetery. Was buried June 29, 1956. MRS. JOSEPHINE EPPOLITO AND SISTER MRS. ROSELYN ROGERS. 1351 N. Austin Blvd., Chicago.
