Col. Melatiah Jordan, Militia Colonel, collector of the port of Frenchman's Bay, in the sixty-fourth year of his age, a position assigned to him by George Washington.
Col. Jordan was a man of tact and judgment; having no clashes or quarrels with his neighbors. He was a sympathetic and generous man; constantly helping the poor. He was an honest and honorable man, who prided himself that his word was as good as his bond; no one questioned his integrity. He was a benevolent and religious man. He built a meeting house, costing several thousand dollars, not finished till after his death, which he gave, with the land under it, to the Congregational Society of Ellsworth, reserving a pew therein for each of his children. He gave to the parish a lot adjoining the meeting house, for a burial ground making a similar reservation. Of his numerous descendants there is not one who does not revere his memory.
