He was born August 21, 1918 in Davenport, Iowa, son of the late Robert Franklin and Gertrude Doolittle Woods.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Evelyn Driver Woods.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Ann Woods; two sons, Fred Woods and his wife Mindee and Tom Woods and his wife Lori, all of Waynesboro; one step-son, William Betlej and his wife Sharon of Staunton; two step-daughters, Carol Coyner and her husband Peyton of Afton and Lyn Chafetz of Mass; one sister, Betty Woodruff of Washington State; a number of grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Paul was born, in a hospital in Nevada, Iowa. He attended High School, in Charlotte, N.C., graduated from Madison College, in Tennessee, and received his Doctorate from Loma Linda School of Medicine in California. He worked in women's health, in Columbia, South Carolina; which led to a residency in Obstetrics at Washington Adventist Hospital, in Tacoma Park, Maryland.
Shortly after setting up practice in Waynesboro, Virginia, he became a Korean War draftee; serving stateside in the Air Force Reserves at Moody A.F.B., in Valdosta, Georgia. He ranked Captain as a Flight Surgeon; briefly serving as Base Commander when needed. With his selective service obligation fulfilled; he then focused on his medical practice; delivering thousands of children, many of whom he treated well into adulthood.
Aside from his love of his chosen career; he was very active in his local church. An avid private pilot, he was a past President of the Flying Physicians Association, held a chair on the Shenandoah Valley Airport Commission as well as acquiring numerous ratings related to his love of flying. He was a charter member of the Virginia Historical Aviation Society based in Richmond, Virginia.
He will be fondly missed by all those whose lives he touched.
A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at 3:30 P.M. Saturday, February 21, 2009 at the Waynesboro Seventh Day Adventist Church by Pastor Will Johns. A private graveside service was held earlier in Riverview Cemetery.
