During the prohibition years, grandpa was considered king of the moonshiners of WV, at least according to the newspaper when he was caught. He was somewhat of a legend in Wayne County. He was known for his extreme strength and jovial nature. There are many stories about him, some of which I wrote about in the Mayo book I authored. He was likely named for his great grandfather who was a lieutenant in the Revolutionary War.
