Funeral service for Mrs. Rosalie Simmons Blacksher, 95, of Nacogdoches, Texas will be held on Friday, October 22, 2010, at 10:00 am at Bethel Baptist Church with Rev. Harold Davis officiating. Burial will follow in Bethel Cemetery.

Mrs. Blacksher passed away peacefully on Monday, October 18, 2010, in Nacogdoches, Texas. She was born on July 16, 1915 in Pisgah, Texas to the late Cornelius Parker Barr and Eva Jane Hodges Barr.

Rosalie graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University in 1933 with a full Teaching Degree. After her graduation she taught at SFA for a number of years. She enjoyed numerous past times including flying. She and her husband were certified pilots and had owned two personal aircraft. She also loved to travel, fishing, flowers, longhorn cattle and horses.

She was a member of the Eastern Star in Benton Harbor, MI and Milam Lodge in Nacogdoches, Tx, as well as a mentor for the Rainbow Girls, a subsidiary part of the Eastern Star in which girls ages 7-11 were mentored. She was also honored as a Worthy Matron.

Rosalie was know for her wonderul spirit, and her heart of gold. She never looked down upon anyone, would go out of her way to help others, and loved to pass on her passion for learning and teaching to many. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, had served as a former church secretary, worked with the GA girls class and was active in many more activities and groups through the church.

She is survived by two nephews, Charlie Barr, Jr., and William Barr both of Nacogdoches; one niece, Candice Barr of Nacogdoches; two great-nephews, Jeff Heflin and wife, Becky of Katy, Texas, and Greg Heflin of Nacogdoches; great-great- nephew, Jacob Wayne Heflin and great-great niece, Regan Heflin both of Katy, Texas; stepchildren, Janis Smith of Burk-Burnett, Texas, James Simmons of Fort Worth, Texas, Sandra Richardson of Houston, Texas and Diane Roberson of Smackover, Arkansas; 10 step-grandchildren and six great-great step-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Cornelius and Eva Barr, she was preceded by a sister, Alma Barr, brother, Charlie Barr, Sr., and husbands, Mack Eldridge "Joe" Simmons (25 Jan 1958) and Buford C. Blacksher.

Pallbearers will be members of the Eastern Star.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jeff Heflin, Greg Heflin and Jacob Heflin.

Visitation with the family will be held on Thursday, October 21, 2010, from 5-7 pm at Laird Funeral Home.

The family would like to extend heart felt thanks to her wonderful caregivers who lovingly cared for her for the past year, Wanda Haney and Eloise Haney.
