Husband of Luisa Allbrooks b.ca1826 d.12/Sept/1868 1st wife,husband of Emma Eliza Gibson d.18/Feb/1907 2nd wife.Son of John E.Jr.and Susanna Amelia Collins Steinwinder. He enlisted with the 22nd Alabama Inf.Co.C.as a private with his son John Franklin Steinwinder and his brother John E.Steinwinder of Choctaw Co. Alabama.He was captured at the battle of Nashville TN became a POW at Camp Douglas in Chicago Ill.The family story is that it took James and his brother John two years to make the walk back home to Choctaw Co. Alabama from Chicago.He served as a Baptist minister,associational missionary and circuit riding preacher mostly in Mississippi.He was the first pastor of Shady Grove Baptist Church in 1888 and pastored Hickory Grove,Pleasant Grove,Eastview and many other Baptist churches. Excerpts from The Laurel Ledger tribute in 1909.In almost every county in the southern part of the state,you will find yet a living history of his work as a minister,and hear a kind expression of Brother Steinwinder. He like Paul,labored with his own hands that he might not be chargeable to the churches to which he ministered.He baptized over 1500 people.
