Manes Hirschy was the first child born to Jonathan and Lena Hirschy on September 4th, 1882 in Adams County, Indiana, four miles southeast of Berne, Indiana. He married Sarah Estella Gates on November 25th, 1903 at the home of her parents, George W. Gates and Rosanna "Jennie" Jane Robison. George was born in Berne, IN, while Jennie was born in Ohio. Stella was the first child of George and Jennie Gates. Jennie was the second marriage of George Gates.

When Manes and Sarah were first married, Manes worked for Millard Smith on the John Nelson Kerr place. He then went to work for Louis Habeggar and lived in an old big log house on the Sam Zurcher farm toward the town of Berne. In 1904, they moved to the town of Berne. Their first son, Virgil arrived on December 27, 1904.

Manes then rented 73 acres off of Louis Rollander in Jefferson township for three years. While there, Elton was born May 22, 1906. Kenneth was born November 15th, 1907. Manes then went to work for Jonathon Rumple for two years. On May 1st, 1910 Clyde was born. He had a heart disease and lived only a few months. Manes then rented the Mark Burdge place for two years. On August 31st, 1912, Harold was born.

The Manes Hirschy family then moved to the Fin Striker place just east of Spring Hill Methodist Church. After a short stay they moved five miles northwest of Topeka, IN (LaGrange County). Cletus was born on July 25th, 1918. They had moved to Barkley, Maryland where Kenneth had died of diphtheria on January 19th, 1919. A year later, his body was moved back to the Backsto Cemetery near Berne and the family moved back to Lagrange County, IN to the John Price farm. Keith was born on September 5th, 1920.

In 1922 they rented a farm on Oliver Lake of Mr. Walb. In 1924 they moved to the Camp farm near Howe, IN (Lagrange Co.) They then moved northwest of Shipshewana, IN where they lived for 20 years. Then they had moved back to Lagrange. Stella died in 1972. Manes moved into the home of his son Elton in Bronson, Michigan and then to Thurston Woods Nursing Home in Sturgis, Michigan. He died November 16th, 1985 in Sturgis, Michigan.
