He was born August 4, 1931, in Staunton, a son of Mrs. Bessie (Hemp) Painter Craft of Staunton and the late Lester L. G. Panter.
Painter served with the U. S. Marine Corps for twenty years. His last rank was staff sergeant. He was a veteran of the Korean War and the Vietnam era. He was with the fleet reserve for 10 years.
