From the book, LINCOLNS BIRTH COUNTY IN THE CIVIL WAR, by Ed Benningfield:SAMUEL CLAYTON ABELL JR. was found In family 832 in the 1860 census of LaRue County. He was a son of Samuel C. Abell Sr. and his wife, Flora Ratchford. Flora, the daughter of Robert Ratchford, married Samuel in Hardin County in September 1832. Samuel C. Abell Sr. was also a son of a Samuel C. Abell Sr. and his grandfather was Robert Abell. Robert Abell came to Washington County, Kentucky in 1788 from Maryland according to Mrs. Elliott's LaRue County history. Samuel Abell Sr., a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, died in 1890.
   S. C. Abell Jr. first enrolled in the Union Army at Camp Pope on November 20, 1861 and gave his age as 18. He was a private in Company C, 15th Ky. Infantry. He apparently deserted at Crab Orchard, Kentucky on October 20, 1862. He was last heard from while at Hodgenville on February 15, 1863.
He apparently enrolled again in the Union Army at Glasgow, Kentucky. he enrolled on August 3, 1863 and was a private in Company F, 37th Ky. Infantry. He was promoted to 8th corporal while in that unit. He was honorably discharged and mustered out at Louisville on December 29, 1864.
   He married Mary Friend on March 6, 1866. In the early 1870's, he married to Martha Beard. He moved to Dewitt County, Illinois in 1900. Samuel died on July 27, 1923 and is buried in the Woodlawn cemetery in Clinton. Clinton is in central Illinois.

In the 1880 LaRue County Census for the Price district, Samuel C. Able was family 13. He was 32 years old, a Farmer, born in Kentucky. His wife, Martha S., was 29. The children were: George. 13; William H., 7; Lena B., 5; Peter, 3; and John M., age 1 year. He lived next door to his parents.

The parents of Samuel Clayton Abell, Jr., moved from Nelson County, Kentucky abt 1845 to a farm in LaRue County near White City where they raised their children. Samuel Clayton Sr., and wife, Flora (Rachford) Abell are buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, White City, LaRue Co., Kentucky. Samuel Clayton Abell, Jr., and wife Martha (Baird) Abell lived on a farm in the Otter Creek section of LaRue County, Kentucky until 1896, when they moved to Wapella, Dewitt County, Illinois, where they bought a farm and farmed until Samuel Clayton Abell's death.
