The son of David & Adeline (Braun) Imes and stepson of Sarah Ann (Wilson) Imes, in 1860 he was a farmer living with his family in Spruce Hill Township, Juniata County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 6" tall and had black hair, black eyes, and a yellow complexion. He apparently never married. His death certificate (No. 105781) claims he was born in Virginia where his father was born, but his military and census records all belie that.
A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Spruce Hill Township, Juniata County, August 13, 1863, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg November 30 as a private with Co. K, 8th U.S. Colored Troops. Described as "a good, faithful soldier", he was promoted to corporal July 1, 1865, and honorably discharged with his company November 10, 1865, at Brownsville, Texas.
He died in the county home at Middlesex Township, Cumberland County, from "chronic valvular heart disease."
