George Owen Albright was born October 2, 1926, at Volga, South Dakota, to Harold and Zella (Eldridge) Albright. He attended school at Volga. On October 2, 1944, he married Verna Strande at Brookings. In 1945 George entered the U.S. Navy. Following his discharge he returned to Volga and worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company for 45 years. Verna died December 27, 2003.
George was an involved member of the Volga community. He was a member of First Lutheran Church, where he served as Sunday School superintendent, and he and Verna were custodians. He was chief of the Volga Fire Department for many years. He was a councilman and mayor of Volga for 17 years. George had a passion for automobiles and trading vehicles, and he was able to fix almost anything. He followed Sioux Valley sports for over 35 years, first watching his children and then his grandchildren. He enjoyed being Ivan the Cossack for the Sioux Valley homecoming. You could set your watch by finding George at the Valley or Volga Gas Stop having a meal or coffee with his friends. He had a passion for his family and making sure everyone was doing well.
Survivors include his two daughters: Rebecca (Lloyd) Holter and Tamara Knolley, both of Volga; grandchildren: Tim Holter of Volga, Lee (Janelle) Holter of Okiboji Iowa, Bridget Gifford of Sioux Falls, and Brooks Knolley of Volga; great-grandchildren: Tatiana and Teagan Holter of Volga; two brothers: Jack (Dixie) Albright of Cave Creek, Arizona, and Robert (Carol) Albright of Melbourne, Florida; two sisters-in-law, Helen Albright and Cozette Albright, both of Colorado; and many nieces, nephews, friends, and coffee buddies. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a brother, Gerald Albright; and a sister, Dorothy Larsen; and an infant child.
