J. W. COURTNEY PASSES AWAY

Died Yesterday Afternoon At His Home in Stockport Following A Stroke

J. W. Courtney passed away yesterday afternoon at his home in Stockport following a stroke of apoplexy. Mr. Courtney is 64 years of age and has spent the greater part of his life in Jefferson county, having resided in and near Fairfield previous to his moving to Stockport. Funeral arrangements are awaiting word from relatives in the west.

Besides his wife, Mr. Courtney is survived by the following children: Frank Courtney and Mrs. Arthur Brookhart of Muscatine; Mrs. Everett Garret, Mrs. Henry Leiner (sic. Lechner), Mrs. Walter Hyde (sic. Heyde) of Brighton; Calvin and Clark, living near Birmingham; Hershel Courtney of Fairfield.

He also leaves the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Fred Metzler and T. A. Courtney of Baker, Ore.; Mrs. Amos Goble, J. L. and M. W. Courtney of La Grande, Ore.; Mrs. Mary Elder of Seattle, Wash.; Mrs. Percy Droz of Fairfield.

COURTNEY FUNERAL WILL BE TOMORROW MORNING, 11 O'CLOCK

The funeral services of J. W. Courtney will be held from the First Christian church in Stockport tomorrow morning at 11 oclock in charge of Rev. Swedesburg. Interment will be made in Walnut cemetery near Pleasant Plain.

OBITUARY

JACOB W. COURTNEY

Jacob W. Courtney was born March 22nd, 1863, in Walnut township in Jefferson county, Iowa. He passed on to the Great Beyond November 6, 1927 at his home in Stockport, Iowa at the age of 84 years, 6 months and 15 days.

He was the eldest son of Samuel and Malinda Courtney. He was united in marriage to Mary A. Foster March 23, 1887 at Clyde, Kansas. Thirteen children were born to this union. They are Mrs. E. L. Garrett of Brighton, Iowa; Frank A. Courtney of Letts, Iowa; Mrs. Arthur Brookhart of Letts, Iowa; Clark V. Courtney of Birmingham, Iowa; Mrs. Walter Hyde (sic) of Brighton, Iowa; Calvin F. Courtney of Libertyville, Iowa; Mrs. Henry Lechner of Brighton, Iowa; Ferne Courtney at home.

Mr. Courtney was preceded in death by Leora, Gordon, Floyd and Carrol who passed away in infancy.

Besides his wife and nine childrenhe is survived by 18 grand children, four sisters and three brothers, Mrs. Fred Metzler and Tom Courtney of Baker, Oregon, Mrs. Eva Droz of Fairfield, Iowa, Mrs. Mae Elder of Seattle, Washington and Mrs. Nan Gobble (sic) of Legrand, Oregon.

Mr. Courtney spent 4 years of his life in Kansas and 4 years in Missouri. The balance of his life was spent in Iowa. During his young manhood Mr. Courtney united with the United Brethren church at Harvy's Mill.

The funeral services were held at the Christian church at Stockport, Iowa, Wednesday morning November 9th at 11 oclock. The services were conducted by Rev. Oscar Swedesberg, pastor of Stockport and Big Cedar Christian churches. The music was furnished by a male quartet composed of Roy Beswick, Perry Smith, John Schltz andProf. Dayton all of Stockport, Iowa.

Short services were held at the grave in Walnut Cemetery (sic) near Brighton, Iowa, where a large group of friends had gathered.. Mr. Courtney's (sic) had lived in that community and were well known there. The neighborhood had prepared a dinner for the entire group at the Otto Macy home.

Mr. Alton of Birmingham and Mr. Burnett of Keosauqua were the funeral directors. The pallbearers were Frank Simpkins, Geo Barthelow, H. R. Conyers, Floyd Johnson, Roy Gracy, and Grant Klise.

The entire sympathy of the community goes out to the Courtney family in this hour of trial.
