He trained with the first company that went from Henry County, Va. to join the Confederate army "The Henry Guards".
This proud company left on June 3rd, 1861.
It was assigned to the 24th VA. Regiment under Jubal Early. It fought the battles of Bull Run, and Manassas, and many others.

Leaving his young family, John Reamey enlisted in the Civil War and died on the battlefield of Manassas, where Dr. Peter Reamey was a surgeon and unable to be with his brother amid the roar of cannon and shell when death came.
