Joseph J.(JJ) Warren was born September 1, 1852 in Liberty, Clay County, Missouri. He married his first wife Emeretta Dye on August 24, 1879 in Grant City, Missouri. She was born May 6, 1860 in Savana, Andrew County, Missouri. They moved from Missouri to Colorado Springs, Colorado and then to Pinedale, Wyoming. They bought land and livestock and homesteaded a 640 acre ranch. The ranch was named the Green River Ranch or 4S Ranch. The Green River ran through the ranch.

Joseph and Emeretta had six children, William, Joseph O., Stella, Henry, Sammy and Mary. Of the six only two are said to have lived to adulthood. Emeretta suffered from a lengthy illness and was nursed by Rachel Washburn Rosser. Emeretta died on June 30, 1916 and Joseph married Rachel about 1917. Rachel died August 30, 1936.
