Barbra Alice Rhoney was born on June 18, 1854 in Catawba Co., North Carolina. She was the daughter of John Gilbert Rhoney (1814-1877) and Mary Jane Robinson (1822-1884), the seventh of their nine known children. Her parents are buried in the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery located in Vale, Lincoln Co., NC.

Alice's father, John, was born in Lincoln Co., NC. He was the son of James Rhoney (1791-1869) and Anna Gilbert (1792-1844). Both were born in Lincoln Co., NC and lived their entire lives in that area of North Carolina.

Her mother, Mary Jane, was also born in Lincoln Co., NC. She was the daughter of David Robinson (1791-1847) and Rosannah Lillis Wilson (1799-1873). Born in Lincoln Co., NC, they lived and died there.

On Nov. 23, 1876 Alice married David Adolphus Boyles (1852-1938), a farmer born in Laurel Hill, Lincoln Co., NC. David was the son of Rev. Josiah Adolphus Boyles (1816-1894) and Anna Elizabeth "Annie" Yount (1819-1905). Both of David's parents were born in Lincoln Co., NC and both died in Burke Co., NC. They are buried in the Salem Methodist Church Cemetery located in Morganton, Burke Co., NC.

Barbra Alice and David were married for 53 years but had only two known children. Their first child was Ida Elizabeth Boyles (1879-1950), named after David's mother, Anna Elizabeth (Yount) Boyles. Their second child, John Adolphus Boyles (1895-1895), lived only 12 days. He was named after both his father and his paternal grandfather, Josiah Adolphus Boyles. His first name, John, was probably for both his G-GF, Rev. John Boyles II (1768-1843), and his GG-GF, John Boyles I (1768-1843).

Alice died on Aug. 17, 1930 in Morganton at the age of 76. She is buried in the Salem Methodist Church Cemetery, where her husband's parents are buried. Her only son, John, had been buried in this cemetery in 1895.

Alice's husband, David, died on Aug. 2, 1838, also in Morganton, at the age of 86. He too, is buried in the Salem Methodist Church Cemetery, next to his wife, Barbra.
