SALISBURY -- John H. Dykes, 91, of Salisbury died Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010, at Wicomico Nursing Home in Salisbury.

John was born Dec. 8, 1918, in Salisbury to the late Columbus and Lossie Ruark Dykes Wilkins.

John was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and a beloved friend to many. He always made time for his family which was the highest priority of his life. After the birth of his cherished great-grandchildren, he became known as "Grampy" which stuck with him until the day he passed away.

He was employed as a truck driver for many years and ended that career with Preston Trucking. He then took up farming full time in the 1950's. He was very meticulous about his crops and his garden. He continued gardening until the age of 88. "Grampy" was always sharing the fruits of his labor which blessed many people. "Grampy" also loved his cats and dogs, always spoiling them with treats.

He was a "charter member" of the coffee club at Hebron Family Restaurant, where he enjoyed spending time with lifelong friends. "Grampy" had a good sense of humor and enjoyed sharing it with others. He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Hebron and served on various committees there. He also helped with the Hebron Fireman's Carnival for many years.

He is survived by his grandchildren, Janet L. Batchelder and her husband, Robert, of Hebron, Lance Collins and his wife, Susan, of Salisbury; great-grandchildren, Megan and Ryan Batchelder and Kari and Phillip Collins; many nieces and nephews and a special niece, Elaine Brown.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Kathleen P. Dykes; beloved stepchildren, Ronald Allen Taylor and Barbara Ann Taylor Collins; brother, Walter Dykes; sisters, Mattie Sturgis and Lottie Smith.

A funeral service will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at Holloway Funeral Home in Salisbury, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. The Rev. William B. Cropper will officiate. Interment will be at a later date in Springhill Memory Gardens near Hebron.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to Coastal Hospice, PO Box 1733, Salisbury, Md. 21802 or the Wicomico County Humane Society, 5130 Citation Drive, Salisbury, Md. 21804.

Arrangements are in the care of Holloway Funeral Home, 501 Snow Hill Road Salisbury.

A kind and gentle man, much like his father, he is missed by all who knew him.
