Norman D. Ackers, 76, of Burlington died at 10:55 p.m. Wednesday, October 13, 2010, at his residence.

Born January 31, 1934 in Rushville, Illinois, he was the son of Luster and Marguerite Miltonberger Ackers. On April 2, 1960 he married Inez Neff in Peoria, Illinois.

Mr. Ackers was a Rushville High School graduate and an Army veteran. He was a Teamster truck driver for 34 years.

Mr. Ackers was a golden glove boxer during high school and he and his wife were avid organic micro farmers. He was a member of a gardening club and enjoyed gardening, livestock and driving horses. He was an active member of the Des Moines County Democratic Central Committee and served as president of the local Teamster Union for four years.

Survivors include his wife, Inez Ackers of Burlington; daughter, Denise (Craig) Breuer of Coralville; son, David Luster (Tracy) Ackers also of Coralville; seven grandchildren; two great grandchildren; one brother, Keith (Joan) Ackers of Bushnell, Illinois; and nieces and nephews.

His parents; one son, Daniel Ackers; two brothers, William and Kenneth Ackers; one nephew, Mark Acker and one great-granddaughter, Abigail Schwartz preceded him in death.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 4:00 p.m. Saturday, October 16th, in Lunning Chapel

The funeral service for Mr. Ackers will be 4:00 p.m. Saturday, October 16th, in Lunning Chapel. Military rites will be conducted by Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. Private family inurnment will be in Greenwood Cemetery at a later date.

Memorials have been established for Starr's Cave and Special Needs Foundation.
