August Niclaus Bokholt, son of Wilhelm and Margaret Bokholt, was born on a farm near Keystone, Iowa, August 25, 1872, and passed away at his home near Millboro, South Dakota October 23, 1944, at the age of 72 years, 1 month and 28 days.

At the age of 20 years, he with his half-brother and family located on a farm near Pipestone, Minnesota, where he helped them establish a home during the drought and depression years of the early 90’s. From there Mr. Bokholt went to Hamlin County, South Dakota, working as a farm laborer.

In 1906 he came to Meadville, Nebraska where he made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Frank Williams and family for several years, working in that vicinity and near Springview. He helped Mr. Slonecker erect the cement store building at Meadville in the year 1910.

At that place he met Miss Velma Woodruff, and on March 18, 1912 they were united in marriage at Winner, South Dakota. For the next 32 years they lived on their homestead near Millboro, South Dakota. One son, Lyle of Grundy Center, Iowa, and two daughters, Josephine of Des Moines, Iowa and Edna of Washington, D.C., came to bless this union. The children with his widow survive. He was a loving devoted husband and father, always thoughtful of the comfort of those near and dear. His passing leaves sad aching hearts.

His parents, two sisters, one half-sister and one half-brother preceded him in death.

Mr. Bokholt never affiliated with any church but was a firm believer in the Lord Jesus Christ as the Savior of mankind. Practicing the Golden Rule and doing little deeds of kindness, little acts of love, making this drear old world like the Heaven above.

August, as he was familiarly called, was never too busy to lend a helping hand when a neighbor called. He was a great lover of flowers and took much pride in his little garden which he tended so faithfully. His favorite song was “Take me As I Am”. Mr. Bokholt held the position of treasurer of Clover School District almost 20 years and was the assessor of Huggins Township for the past nine years. He was respected and loved by his family, his neighbors and friends, and will long be remembered.
