Betty June Mackey Kennedy of Braggs, Oklahoma passed from this life on Tuesday, October 12, 2010 at her home with her loving family at her side. She was 80 years old. Mrs. Kennedy was born in Braggs, the second of five children to James and Lillie (Fanning) Mackey on June 12, 1930. After graduating Salutatorian of her high school class in Braggs, she continued her love for learning and education by obtaining her Bachelor's Degree, followed by her Master's Degree in Education from Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, OK. With this education, Mrs. Kennedy continued her love for educating and mentoring children of all ages in Idaho, New Mexico and her hometown of Braggs. She retired after 34 years of teaching. During this time, Ms. Kennedy touched many lives. The positive impact she had was a result of her love for people of all ages. It was common for Betty to greet people with a hug. Her sweet smile and caring heart were always apparent. This kindness will live forever in the many lives she touched. Mrs. Kennedy married the boy from high school who "chased her", Robert Dale Kennedy on August 25, 1951 in Van Buren, AR. This special union resulted in two daughters, Tina and Tammy, which completed this wonderful family. Bob and Betty worked very hard to provide a loving home for their children. This home became a place of love, comfort and refuge not just for their children, but a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. Ms. Kennedy was "Mama" to her children and Aunt Betty to numerous family members. This title was also common to many others, even those not related. Her mother and father, James and Lillie Mackey; the love of her life, Robert Dale Kennedy; and her special sister, Peggy Mackey Slape, preceded Mrs. Kennedy in death. Her smile lit up a room and her touch and presence would bring comfort. Her laughter would bring smiles to all those around her. Mrs. Kennedy provided care and comfort for her entire family. She was the "care-giver" of many. She gave her time and love unconditionally and freely. If a family member, friend or someone in her community was in need; Mrs. Kennedy never failed to make every effort to meet that need. This was done discreetly and with no expectation of receiving anything in return. Mrs. Kennedy was a faithful member of the Braggs Church of Christ for over half a century. She was also a life long member of the American Legion Auxiliary and Treasurer for KKI Retired Teacher's Organization. She loved the sound of laughter and had a sense of style all her own. It wasn't uncommon sitting on her porch swing visiting and waving at the many people who drove by. She was also known for her holiday clothing complete with large necklaces and dangling earrings. Mrs. Kennedy was an Angel on Earth. There are many heavy hearts because of her passing. But, God is rejoicing because a Special Angel has joined his family in Heaven. Mrs. Kennedy was loved by many and will be missed. Her smile and spirit will remain in our hearts forever. Services will be held at 2:30 P.M. Monday, October 18, 2010 at the Braggs High School Gym with Leon Brasher and Roger Moore officiating. Burial will be in South Bethel Cemetery under the direction of Lescher-Millsap Funeral Home in Muskogee.
