James ("Jim") Lafayette Steel was the sixth child of David and Margaret Steel. The 1860 Hill County TX Census indicates he was six years ald and his birthplace as Texas. So he must have been born shortly after his parents arrived in Texas from Arkansas. Jim married a neighbor girl, Mary Ann (Molly) Parham, in Hill County, TX on the 19th of September 1878. James and Molly had a farm south of Hillsboro near Menlow TX and near their parents, David and Margaret Steel and James and Nancy Parham. Molly was the Parham's fifth child, born on Feb 15, 1861 in Hill County TX. James and Molly tried to start a family but they lost their first two baby daughters (Rora and A.L.). In July 1886, their son, Joseph Lafayette ("J.L.") was born followed by a brother, Thomas Crockette in April 1888. The boys grew up on the Steel family farm and Tom resided in Hill County until his death. Jim and Molly helped raise their grandchildren, E. Chrystell, Hazel, and R. Crockett, after their mother, Ebbie, died of cancer in 1918.

Jim, Molly, and Molly's parents, the Parham's, are all buried in Vaughn Cemetery, Hill Co., TX.
