3 Drown on Lake Outing
Murray Ky, June 12
A Murray Co. man, his wife and 10 year old daughter drowned in Kentucky Lake near the Kentucky-Tennessee
line Wednesday afternoon while on a family outing. Two other children of the couple were pulled to safety.
The dead were identified by Henry County (Tenn.) coroner Dr. Paul Mobley Paris as:
Melvin Oliver 41, Murray Rt. 1
Beth Oliver 31
Penny Marie Oliver 10
The tragedy occurred near Cypress Spring Boat Dock (formerly Morgan's Boat Dock) about 8 miles southeast of New Concord.
Witnesses said Mrs. Oliver and her three children, Susan 12, Tommy 11, Penny Marie 10 were wading along the old road bed that formerly crossed Cypress Creek while Oliver sat on the bank nearby.
All four suddenly stepped in water over their heads and began struggling.
Melvin Oliver, who retired several years ago because of a heart condition, jumped in to the water in vain effort to save his children and wife.
Witnesses said he reached Penny Marie, but both sank immediately. Two men nearby, identified as Bill Donelson of Murray and Allen McCulston of New Concord, rescued Susan and Tommy and restrained them from returning to the water to try to save their family.
The bodies of Mr and Mrs. Oliver were recovered about 30 minutes later in about 10 feet of water. While Penny Marie's body was recovered at 6:45 p.m. nearly 4 hours later.

and five brothers,Ramie Franklin, Muscatine Iowa, L.C. Franklin, Evansville, Reed Franklin, Evansville, Blenard Franklin, Chicago and Phillip Franklin, Murray.
The bodies of the drowning victims were removed to the Max Churchill Funeral Home arrangements are incomplete
