Originally a doctor, he became adviser to the Rothschild family and secretary to the London Great Synagogue. Undertook charitable missions on behalf of Rothschilds to the Jewsih communities in Eastern Europe. Promoted the Act of Parliament which enabled the establishment of the United Synagogue in the UK, still the major British Jewish religious organisation, headed by the Chief Rabbi.
