William Henry RILEY was born to Daniel RILEY and Marion/Marian/Mary Ann __ on 2 April 1828 in Norton, Medina County, Ohio, now Norton, Summit County, Ohio. (Summit County was formed in 1840 by taking some land from the neighboring counties, and as a result, Norton became part of Summit County.)


Served in Civil War - Co. H, Mich Battn Cavalry Regt, Co. H, 2nd Missouri Cavalry, aka Merrill's Horse.

William enlisted in Battle Creek as a Private on 3 Sep 1861 and was assigned to Company H, Mich Battn Cavalry Regiment on 6 Sep 1861. In Battle Creek, two companies of cavalry "H" by Capt. J. H. Rogers, and "I" by Capt. J. B. Mason were recruited by the Missouri regiment and became part of what is known as 2nd Missouri Cavalry regiment, aka Merrill's Horse, at Benton Barracks for immediate service. William was sent to St. Louis, Missouri to serve.

William received a disability discharge from Company H, Mich Battn Cavalry Regiment on 7 Aug 1862 at Saint Louis, MO. He served for nearly a year (0 Yrs 11 Mos 8 Days) before he was discharged.


Was a farmer.


Married Edna S. Mason on 15 Apr 1846 in Brunswick, Medina Co., Ohio.

They had 9 children. Two died young, 1 adult died before 1900.

PIONEER PASSES AWAY

William Riley Dies Late Friday Afternoon- Has Lived Here About 65 Years.


William Riley, an old respected resident of the city died at his home on South Mulberry Street late yesterday afternoon. Death was due to old age, and hasten by an attack of the grip.


Mr. Riley was born in Norton, Medina county in 1829, moving to this city in 1847 at which time he engaged in farming. He was married to Miss Edna Mason in April 15, 1846. Five [surviving] children were born to them, two sons and three daughters: Mrs. Wm. Quinn of Scottsville, Mich; Mrs. A. J. Russell, of Battle Creek; Mrs. Fenton of Lexington, Neb.; Alfred Riley of East Leroy and Ernest Riley of this city. He is also survived by two brothers and one sister.


The funeral arrangements have not been made, pending the arrival of the children.


NOTE: This article listed only the surviving children. He and Edna had 9 children, two died young and daughter named Martha died in 1879 and the other daughter Lucretia died in 1901.


The fact that William was survived by two brothers and one sister.... We do know that William had a brother named Milton but he died in 1864. He also had a brother named Solomon Benjamin Riley who moved to Muskegon soon after his marriage and settled there. He died in 1907. If William had another brother and a sister, we do not know who they are yet.

The funeral services of the late William Riley, who died Friday last, occurred this afternoon at 2:30 from the house and 3:00 o'clock from the Methodist church. Rev. A. A. Geiger officiated. Remains were placed in Oakridge vault.
