January 5, 1864--Joseph Ansel enlisted as a Private, age 18; volunteer recruit in Co. B, 78th OH Infantry. The Regiment was organized January 11, 1862, but Ansel joined the Regiment on January 5, 1864, just before the veterans reenlisted and were on furlough March–April 1864.

April 10, 1865--Private Ansel was wounded in the right hip an taken prisoner during the advance on Raleigh, NC. It is not known exactly when he was released but it must have been shortly after as the Confederacy was at the time collapsing.

July 11, 1865--Private Ansel and the other soldiers of the 78th OH mustered out at Louisville, KY. Ansel return to his home in Muskingum County.
