Funeral Notice for Alfred Hughellyn Hunter in The Mendon Dispatch, February, 1953:

Funeral Services for Alfred H. Hunter, who died Wednesday morning of last week in St. Mary hospital, were held Saturday afternoon at 2:00 in the Curry Funeral Home. The service was conducted by the Rev. Richard Trotter. Lloyd Sellers, soloist, was accompanied by Miss Leatrice Dedert.

Masonic rites were conducted by Walter Chatten, Master, and Charles Sparks, chaplain. Pallbearers were George Benson, William Taylor, Lawrence Mealiff, George Tenvorde, James Tieken and Clarence Ward. Burial was in Mendon Cemetery.

Alfred Hughellyn Hunter was born in Houston Township, Adams County Illinois on August 29, 1885. He was the son of Hugh and Ellen Turner Hunter. Following the demise of his mother which occurred several days after his birth, Alfred was taken to the home of his grandparents, Hugh and Jane Hunter who resided in Honey Creek Township. His childhood was accordingly influenced by his aunt Elizabeth and uncles, George and Joe Hunter, who resided at the home and cared for him after the death of their parents.

The deceased attended White Oak School, Camp Point High School and the University of Illinois where he attained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering in 1909. Later he also received the Degree of Professional Engineer from the same institution.

In 1911, Mr. Hunter was united in marriage with Mary C. Fisher of Peoria, Illinois and to this union were born three children.

His professional career was closely associated with the development and construction of the highway system of the state of Illinois. From 1910 until 1926, he was employed by the Illinois Division of Highways where he subsequently rose to District Engineer and special assistant to the Chief Highway Engineer at Springfield. In 1926, Mr. Hunter resigned from the Highway Department to accept the position of Field Engineer and secretary-treasurer of the Illinois Contractors Association which he held for a period of 15 years. The last few years of his professional career were spent with the Bureau of Maintenance of the Illinois Division of Highways. Following his retirement in 1946, he returned to Mendon where he resided until his death.

Mr. Hunter is survived by his widow and three children, Mrs. E.J. Baumbach of South Bend, Indiana, Robert Hunter of Mendon, Illinois, Alfred Jr. of Batavia, Ohio, and eight grandchildren.
