Sgt. 1st Class Jay M. Byerly, 36, husband of Ruth Fegert Byerly, 1137 Union St., was killed in action during a May 6 night operation at Que Son, South Vietnam. He was the 59th Lancaster County resident to be killed in the Vietman war. Recipient of numerous medals for meritorious service, Sgt. Byerly was a career soldier. He enlisted in the Army on April 14, 1952. He was a native of West Lampeter Twp., a son of Andrew R. and Mabel E. Gehr Byerly, Conestoga R2. He was a member of Creswell Evangelical Congregational Church. He also was a corresponding student of LaSalle Extension University. Surviving besides his wife and parents are three children, Larry, Garry, and Dina, at home; brothers and sisters: Andrew R. Jr., Lititz; H. Charles, Nordheim, Texas; Grace Arlene, wife of Richard J. Greyer, Lancaster; Virginia M. Powers, Lancaster; Mabel E., wife of Henry Zeere, Millsboro, Del.; A. Ruth, wife of Wayne Sload, Columbia; and Alva Marie, wife of Daniel Randazzo, Forestville, Md.
