Frederick Bolender was the second son of Johann Adam Bohlender and his wife Anna Elisabeth Kreps who came to Pennsylvania from Germany in 1754. He was baptized on June 1, 1760 by the pastor of the Millbach Church in Lebanon County with the name Johann Friedrich. The family moved to Snyder County in the early 1770s and settled on land about a mile east of Middleburg. Frederick served in a militia unit known as Rangers on the Frontier during the Revolutionary War.
Frederick purchased the extreme northwestern part of his father's extensive land holdings which included some level land suitable for farming but was mostly a wooded hillside, a good source of timber for the sawmill he was operating as early as 1799. The mill was located along a small stream which ran through the property. He erected a house on the east side of the stream. The property passed to his son George upon his death and then to his grandson Frederick who sold it in 1844.
--------
Because Frederick's parents came from Germany, his middle name was perhaps originally spelled Friedrich--the German spelling--rather than Freidrich.
