Civil War Union Brevet Major General. Served in the Civil War first as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 73rd New York Volunteer Infantry before being tabbed to join the staff of Maj. General John Adams Dix. Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, he served as an Aide-de-Camp and Assistant Adjutant General to General Dix. He ended the Civil War as the agent for Exchange of Prisoners at Fort Monroe, Virginia. He was brevetted Brigadier General and Major General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services during the war".
