Enlisted in Company D, Maine 16th Infantry Regiment at the rank of Private on 14 Aug. 1862. Promoted to Full Corporal sometime before being promoted to Full Sergeant on 23 Jan. 1863. He was wounded in battle, taken prisoner and returned to his company some time before mustering out at Arlington Heights, Virginia at the rank of First Sergeant.
