His surname was spelled Pattan on his grave marker. It appears that this variation of the name was used interchangeably with Pattani by various family members.

He used the name Cherubino Pattani on at least one census record (1910), as well as on his voter registration records in Plumas County, California, for the years 1888, 1892, and 1896. He seems to have switched back and forth between his real name and the more American-sounding name "Irwin Kirby Pattan".
