He graduated in 1941 from the United States Military Academy, West Point. He served in the US Army in Europe during World War II and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He served in Army intelligence during the Korean War. Among his military awards and decorations were the Silver Star; Bronze Star Medal; and Purple Heart.
He was predeceased by his second wife of 43 years, Martha Wilkie Longino. He was survived by a daughter from his first marriage; three sons from his second marriage; and six grandchildren.
Interment on August 25, 2010.
