Spencer Thorndyke Alden, Ensign

Son of Samuel Rockwell and Carrie Savin Alden. He was a lineal descentant of John Alden. Spencer was born on July 4, 1894 in Traverse Bay, Michigan. He was educated at Michigan University and Cornell University. Spencer enlisted in the US Navy on April 12, 1917. He trained at Norfolk Naval Station and Pensacola, FL. Commissioned Ensign. Appointed Naval Aviator Pilot. Transferred to Naval Aviation Station, Bayshore, Long Island. Spencer was killed in an airplane accident on March 4, 1918 in the Great South Bay. He was buried with military honors in Greenwood Cemetery, New York City.
