Joseph Martin Erwin was born to John Wesley Erwin and Elizabeth Jane Eakin Erwin.

Joseph Martin Erwin was born in Caddo Parish, Louisiana. He moved with his parents to Bright Star, Miller County, Arkansas in about 1872 and then to Cass County, Texas in about 1883 where he grew to manhood. He married Cora Ellen Smith in Cass County, Texas on 06 Sep 1897. They moved to Wichita Falls, Texas soon after. His children were all born in Wichita Falls.

Joe was employed as a grocer. After a short time as a farmer in Byers, Clay County, Texas, he returned to Wichita Falls and opened his own neighborhood grocery store at 14th and Broad.

Joe was a Christian. He was a deacon and staunch supporter of First Baptist Church of Wichita Falls. He is now in Eternity in the presence of His Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
