Van Horn attended the University of Washington.

Flight Officer Van Horn was a pilot assigned to the 7th Air Force, 11th Bombardment Group, 42nd Bombardment Squadron. He was piloting Douglas A-20 #40-130 and took off from Kualoa Air Field, Hawaii with two other men aboard. They had mechanical trouble, were unable to make it back to base and ended up ditching in Kaneohe Bay. The two passengers were able to make it out of the plane and were rescued, but Van Horn was killed.
