Joseph Gier was born in Miller County, Missouri May 3, 1855, and died at his home near Bagnell, Wednesday, September 20,1939, being at the time of his death 84 years, 4 months and 17 days of age. He was the son of Thomas and Martha (Conner) Gier and was married to Ellen J. Vaughn September 13, 1874. To this union was born a family of fourteen children, five of whom survive, as follows: Lucy Brewer of Barnett, Elzie Gier of High Point, Jake Gier of Bagnell, Renia Watts of Randolph, Iowa and Earnest Gier of Enon. Nine children preceded him in death: Katie Stout, Lizzie Craig, Fletta Beard, Delia Nibert, John Gier and four children died in infancy. Mr. Gier is also survived by 63 grandchildren and 47 great-grandchildren. He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife, five children and a host of relatives and friends.
He became a member of the Blue Springs Church early in life and later changed his membership to Birdsong Church where he became a charter member and lived a devoted Christian life until his death.
Funeral services were conducted at Blue Springs Baptist Church at 2:000 p.m. September 24 by Rev. David Vaughn. Pallbearers were the grandsons of the deceased and the flower girls were the granddaughters. Interment was in the Lamm Cemetery.
