DEATH BY DROWNING
We have to record a very painful case of death by drowning, which has brought
great distress upon one of our most respected families. Fred Albee, aged 18
years, a son of Mr. James Albee, of this place, was drowned on Sunday of last
week--Dec. 22d--under peculiarly trying circumstances. His father owns a farm
in the town of Cato, on the Manitowoc river, which is not ? but upon which he
is watering some cattle that require daily attention. On the Sunday above named,
Mr. Albee who had been taking care of the stock, returned to his home in the
village and left Fred in charge.
Being alone, and without anything to occupy his time, he went on the river and
put on his skates, possibly for amusement or with the intention of calling upon
some of the neighboring farmers. His father remained in Manitowoc until Christmas,
when he returned to the farm, but Fred was missing and he could gain no information
respecting him. He found the cattle in their stalls, as he left them, since which
they had evidently had no attention. Without knowing what other course to pursue,
he went immediately to Fond du Lac, supposing it possible that Fred might have gone
there to enlist as a soldier, but gaining no tidings of him there, he returned
immediately to the farm, when, with the assistance of his neighbors, an examination
of the river was made.
They presently found a place which had been broken through and closed over with
thin ice. Here they found his hat, and by breaking the ice some twenty feet from
this spot, they found his body. Thus, without the knowledge of any one, the
unfortunate young man perished. He was the oldest son, was a man in stature, and
the constant help and companion of his father. It is truly a sad and crushing event,
and one which must cause the deepest sorrow to the family; but terrible as it is,
the knowledge of his fate, and the recovery of his remains, must prove a source of
alleviation, when contrasted with the uncertainty and suspense, that must have ensued,
but for the relief which was so promptly and providentially afforded.
