Ahrens, Former Asylum Trustee, Is Dead; Was 79
William J. Ahrens Sr., 79, Nagel avenue, retired salesman and fruit farm
operator, who resigned last month as a member of the asylum trustees after
25 years on that board, died Sunday morning at the Holy Family hospital.
He had been in failing health several weeks.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Wesley Methodist
church, the Rev. Carl Hagen officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen
cemetery.
Mr. Ahrens, a lifelong resident of the county, was born in Kossuth in 1866.
Fifty-four years ago he married Miss Anna Donath. For 32 years he traveled
for Milwaukee fruit and farm nursery stock firms. Later he operated the
north side fruit farm.
In 1921 he was named a trustee of the asylum and served continuously until
resigning at the fall session of the county board. He was a charter member
of the United Commercial Travelers and president and trustee of the Wesley
Brotherhood. He served as a supervisor on the county board and was also a
town treasurer for many years.
In 1941 Mr. and Mr. Ahrens observed their golden wedding anniversary with
an open house at the Lincoln park fieldhouse.
Survivors are his wife; three daughters, Mrs. Alfred Milbrook of Chicago,
Mrs. Mabel Vosburg of this city, Mrs. Carl Kopplin of Evanston; three sons,
Elwood and William Jr., of Two Rivers, Clifford of this city; four brothers,
John and Charles of Two Rivers, George of Wausau, Louis of this city; sister,
Mrs. Anna Koeser of Two Rivers; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The body may be viewed at the Urbanek and Schlei funeral home after Tuesday
noon and will be moved to the church at 10 a.m. Wednesday to lie in state
until the hour of the service.
