Walter A. (Wally) Ahrens Sr., 73, of 1215 Huron St., Manitowoc, died early Sunday morning in Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Schneider and Purath Funeral Home and 11 a.m. In Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Manitowoc. The Rev. William Zimmer will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc.
Mr. Ahrens was born September 16, 1904 in Shoto, son of the late Louis and Rose Arnholz Ahrens. He attended Two Rivers area schools. The well known band and orchestra musician and vocalist Manitowoc native who played the saxophone and clarinet, had been associated with the Manitowoc Marine Bankk for 57 years and Dick Fricke's Trio for 25 years. He married Ann M. Theiss June 24, 1931 in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Two Rivers. Mr. Ahrens had been employed with Paragon Electric Co., for 38 years in the motor parts division. He was a member of Manitowoc Musician Association, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 706, Manitowoc Senior Citizens, Manitowoc Housing Authority and member and co-director of Senior Citizens Warblers.
Survivors include his wife, Ann; two sons and daughters-in-law, Walter J. and Doris Ahrens Jr., of Manitowoc and Ron and Cindy Ahrens of Greendale; a daughter and son-in-law, Mark and Shirley Becker of Manitowoc; two brothers, Clarence of Manitowoc and Arthur of California; two sisters, Mrs. Irene Palmer of California and Mrs. Evelyn Mapls; grandchilden. A granddaughter, Lisa, and a sister, Fern Kupsch preceded him in death.
Friends may call in Schneider and Purath Funeral Home, 4 o'clock to 9 o'clock this Monday afternoon where members of the Marine Band will gather to pay tribute to Mr. Ahrens at 7 o'clock and a parish prayer service will be at 7:30 o'clock.
