Everette Mae Ward Wampler, 93, of Rural Retreat died Monday, March 14, 2005, at her home.
She was born May 21, 1911, in the Zion community of Wythe County, a daughter of the late Everett Rush Ward, a Confederate hero, and the late Laura Lena Hale Ward. She was one of the last daughters in the state of Virginia whose father wore gray uniforms in the Civil War. Her father was a member of Company D. 45th Infantry, CSA. On April 28, 2000, she was honored at a banquet of the Walker-Terry Camp, Sons of the Confederate Veterans.
She was a former member of King's Grove United Methodist Church and she was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Crockett.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 73 years, Fred I. Wampler; a son, Dan Ward Wampler; two brothers, James Preston Ward and Early Raymond Ward; two infant brothers, Billy Ward and Edward Ward; and two half brothers, William Guy Testerman and Floyd Carl Testerman. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Juanita and Harry Gray of Bluefield, W.Va., and Carol and James Matt of Roanoke; two grandsons, Dennis Wampler of Roanoke, and Phillip Wampler of Salem; two great-grandchildren, Travis Wampler and Casey Wampler, both of Salem; a sister, Laverne Ward Clough of Baltimore, Md.; a brother, Sam Hale Ward of Rural Retreat; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 18, 2005, at 1 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel in Rural Retreat, with the Rev. Vince Krauss officiating. Interment will be in the King's Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery.
