Harold was born Febuary 10,1922 in Boyd Bend Whitley County Kentucky . He was the son of Joseph Henry and Nancy Louisa Hayes Boyd. He was educated in Whitley County Schools. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on a Troop Transport. His ship the Charles Carroll was in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans during the War. It took part in five invasions including D-Day in Normandy, France and Okanawa Island in Japan.
After the war he was in refrigeration and air conditioning He also worked at the General Electric Aircraft company in Cincinnati, Ohio , as a machinist. He married Lois Elizabeth Hill She was the daughter of Wolford and Flora McKeehan Hill of the Whetstone Community.
