George was the 5th of 10 children (4th sons) born of Justus Bartholomew (1814-1876) and his wife Sally Ann Wood (1820-1892). George's siblings were: Lewis R. (b. 1842), George (1843-1848), Betsey E. (b. 1844), Orson C. (b. 1847), Nathaniel W. (b. 1851), Fanny (b. 1853), Lemma (b. 1856), Frederick (b. 1858), and Elmer Jefferson (b. 1862).

George married, June 22, 1881, Violet A. Carver (1857-1935).
