Son of Daniel Hudson Burnham, "The Father of American City Planning," best remembered for his direction of the World's Columbian Exposition from 1892 to 1893, and for designing several famous buildings, including the Flatiron Building in New York City, and the Postal Square Building and Union Station in Washington, DC.

John Burnham, the son, received his education in the Evanston public schools, and under private tutors, at the Hill School, Pottstown, PA and at Princeton University. He began his business career in a broker, in Chicago, in 1903, in association with W. G. Gilmore. In 1906 he entered into partnership with Albert E. Butler, under the firm name of Burnham & Butler, and so continued until 1918, when the present firm of John Burnham & Co. was formed.

He was an accomplished yachtsman, horseman, and outdoor sportsman.
