In 1910, Jesse founded the Shwayder Trunk Manufacturing Co. with his brothers. Since he was a religious man, he started a luggage line in 1916 called Samsonite after the Biblical strongman. Later, the name of the company was changed to Samsonite. The "Lego" series of toy building blocks were developed and made by the Samsonite Corp. in the 1960's. Jesse and his family foundation contributed generously to the building campaign of the Denver Art Museum. The museum named their Asian Art Collection after Jesse and Nellie Shwayder in gratitude. The Shwayder Art Building at the University of Denver is also named after Jesse and Nellie Shwayder. The Shwayder monument has a cement ball on top of a pedestal because Jesse was known to give "Golden Rule" marbles to his new employees. Each marble had a golden band around the circumference with the Biblical Golden Rule inscribed on it.
