Death of Mrs. Gilbert.
Mrs. R. J. Gilbert, who has been in declining health for the past several years, passed away at her home near the Soldiers Home in West Lawn on April 10, at 8 p.m., an attack of pneumonia in addition to the infirmities of old age being the direct cause of her demise. She was aged 81 years, 8 months and 3 days. The deceased was born in Giles county, Virginia, August 7, 1833, and at the age of seven years left with her parents for Kentucky, settling in Carter county. Here she was married in 1852 to S. T. Gilbert, and they continued to make their home in that state until 1865, following the close of the civil war when they moved to Jasper county, Iowa. In 1880 they family removed to Polk county, this state, and five years later to Keith county where they remained for ten years, coming to Grand Island in 1895, and making their home in this city since that time. Three daughters and five sons, besides the husband, are left to mourn the loss of a loving wife and mother, the surviving children being J. B. Gilbert, of Ogallala; B. M. Gilbert, of Mitchell; S. J. Gilbert, of Weisro, Idaho; Oliver E. Gilbert, who for the past several years has taken care of his parents in this city; Henry M. Gilbert, of Ogallala and Charles Gilbert, of Gracie, Neb. The surviving daughters are Mrs. Martha Wilson, of Paxton; Mrs. Amy Evans of Sutherland, and Ms. Libbie Kindle of Gering. The remains were sent to Ogallala today where the funeral will be held at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon and interment made in the Ogallala cemetery.
