Obituary:

The death of Charles Allen Benson occured Sunday afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Earl C. Rich, in this place.

The cause is given as valvular disease of the heart, from which he has suffered some time.

Br. Benson was born at Wallingford, Rutland county, Vermont, on July 4, 1831.

Most of his life was spent in this county, a portion in Randolph, where he was known as an upright citizen and kind parent.

He was employed at an early date as clerk in the office of the Erie railroad at Salamanca, after leaving that position he came to Randolph and with his wife took care of the venerable Mr. and Mrs. Adams, and afterward removed to a farm on Bucktooth Run.

A portion of his life was spent at Little Valley and other places in this vicinity.

Mr. Benson was a member of the C. B., Ninth New York Cavalry, and belonged to Fuller Post, G. A. R. at Little Valley. He was also a member of the order of free Masons, and belonged to Randolph lodge.

Mr. Benson was married to MIss Susan C. Adams, sister of C. P. and T. E. Adams of Randolph, at the home of her parents in Conewango, on March 12, 1854.

Thirteen children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Benson, eight of whom with the bereaved widow, survive. They are: Frank M. of Salamanca; Theodore E. of Youngstown, O.; George A. of Elmira; Paul A. of Little Valley; Charles N. of Jamestown Mrs. Nina Smith, Mrs. China Helms; Mrs. Mary Rich of Randolph. Each of the children with their families were in attendance at the funeral.

The funeral was conducted by the Rev. H. A. Ellis of Sheffield, Pa., at the home of Mrs. Rich Wedeneday afternoon. Burial services at RAndolph cemetery were in charge of the Randolph Masons.

Among the friends who were present were Mrs. M. L. Newton of Cattaraugus, Mrs. Josseph Barnard of Bucktooth and Mrs. Joseph Cullen of Little Valley, who are sisters of Mr. Benson. These latter were accompanied by their families.
