PAUL L. ADAMS

Three Manitowoc Servicemen Are Reported War Casualities
War department telegrams from Washington the past 24 hours brought news of the
death of two young Manitowoc sericemen, prominent in their school days on
athletic teams of Lincoln high school, and confirmation of the death of the
husband of a Manitowoc woman.
The dead:
S/Sgt. Joseph William (Zeke) Zahorik, 21-year-old son of Register of deeds and
Mrs. Joseph C. Zahorik, 1011 St. Clair street.
Pfc. Paul Adams, 21-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Adams, 955 N. Sixth Street.
Pvt. Horace A Stoeppelman, husband of the former Jean Luecke, 1609A S. Tenth street.
Sgt. Zahorik, who was a replacement division of Gen. Hodges' First army, was
killed in action in Germany on Mar. 4. Little is known about his participation
in combat, for "Zeke" as he was familiarly known to his friends, wrote nothing
of what he was doing.
Pfc. Adams of the U.S.M.C., previously reported as wounded was killed Mar. 2
at Iwo Jima. A letter written by the loacal marine on Feb. 5 to his parents
said "he was aboard ship and about to take a ride which should be very
interesting. I guess it will be just like a football game at Lincoln and this
time we should win. By the time you get this I should be back and resting up,
but don't worry about me. I'll be O.K." Adams was one of 11 men in his platoon
to get safely across Iwo Jima following landing operation at H-Hour. His field
jacket in the pack carried on his back was shot so full of holes it looked like
a sieve.
Both Adams and Zahorik entered Lincoln high school after attending Woodrow Wilson
junior high. Zahorik was on the school's basketball and football squads for three
seasons, while Adams played with the football eleven for three years.
First Major Battle
Pfc. Adams had been in Hawaii preceding going into his first major battle at Iwo
with the Fifth Marine division.
He was born in Manitowoc on Nov. 2, 1924. In April, 1943 he received his notice
to enter services, and took his basic Marine training at San Diego. Later he was
stationed at Mare Island and Camp Pendleton.
His parents, one brother (Private), his paternal grandfather, Paul Adamsky of Two
Rivers and his maternal grandfather, Peter Kotarek of Manitowoc survive.
