Varter (Armenian for Rose) was the daughter of Nazareth and Manoushag Sook(i)asian. Her birth year is typically given as late summer 1901 and in one case 1902, however her father had immigrated to Philadelphia in late spring 1900, making those dates impossible. Thus September 1900 is the most likely date, some months after her father had left. Rose's mother died when she was very young, perhaps of complications from childbirth with her, though this is not confirmed. Rose's father had gone to Alexandria, Egypt and then on to America to start a new life and make money for his family, so Rose and her brother Sarkis were raised by their grandparents Toros and Mariam. When Sarkis turned 10 he was sent to be with his father in Philadelphia. This likely made Nazareth realize he needed a wife, and so he wrote to his father in Malatya to find one for him. Mariam Donoian was selected as his bride and was sent to him in Philadelphia and brought Varter Rose with her to reunite the family. They traveled to America and arrived at Ellis Island on July 31, 1911. Rose likely attended Philadelphia schools once there as her brother did, and eight years later in 1919 she married Kevork George Endrigian. They had three children and lived at 1620 N. Franklin Street. However only in her 20s, Varter Rose developed kidney disease (uremia). By 1928 it was known that she would not live much longer, and so her extended family gathered for a portrait with her. The second picture on this page is of her taken from that photograph. She died within a year and was was buried at Monument Cemetery (Section D, Lot 658, Grave 3N) in North Philadelphia. Monument closed in 1956 and her son had her moved to Lawnview Cemetery.
